About

You are Always Welcome

The Greater Montreal Chapter is home to the Island City chorus and is a member of the world's largest all-male singing organization, the Barbershop Harmony Society, an organization of over 30,000 men of all ages, from all walks of life, who love to sing a cappella harmony.

The Island City Chorus actively participates in and promotes a variety of singing activities in and around the Island of Montreal. We produce an annual show and participate in a Christmas Show in December with our sister chorus the West Island Chorus of Sweet Adelines.

The Island City Chorus and chapter quartets are active competitors, participating in division and district competitions sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society. Bring harmony to your special event. The entire chorus or one of the chapter quartets can be engaged to provide entertainment for conventions, meetings, parties, fundraisers, weddings, or for other special occasions. If you love to sing, we encourage you to come by and explore the world of a cappella harmony with us.

Our History

The Island City Chorus is the end result of many amalgamations over the years. The most recent was with the Pierrefonds Chapter in 1994. The old Mountain City Chorus was struggling and the Pierrefonds Chapter decided that it was better to amalgamate rather than see the flagship chapter disband. The Montreal Chapter had in its past represented the Northeastern District at the Barbershop Harmony Society's International Competition and numbered as many as 100 men.

In recent years the Montreal Chapter has hosted the 2003 International Competition here at the Bell Centre, and sung at a number of prestigious venues. The Chorus has won first place honours at the Regional Choral Competition (ARCIM) and has participated in the Mondiale Chorale in Laval, QC.

Our Director

Mark

Mark Lewis is in his 3rd year as musical director of Island City Chorus. He previous directed the Pierrefonds Chapter and was the Island City's first director after amalgamation...

He graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music, and is currently a Information Technologies Professional employed at John Abbott College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.

Mark has sung in many quartets, most notably the 1990 District Champions Something Old Something New, and while on contract in Toronto had the pleasure of winning a silver medal with the Toronto Northern Lights Chorus. He returns to the District stage with his new quartet Sound Accord. He also directs the West Island Chorus of Sweet Adelines.

One of Mark's greatest joys is spending time with his five children, Heather, Alex, James Kathleen and Christina.
